Because Dutch weather is highly changeable, Anita and Henk say complaining about it is a safe form of small talk that builds connection and fills social gaps.
0:00Hoi hoi, leuk dat je luistert. Pak een kop koffie, ga even zitten. Vandaag praten we, ja hoor, over het weer.
Hi there, great to have you listening. Grab a cup of coffee, sit down. Today we’re talking, yep, about the weather.
0:07En vooral, waarom klagen Nederlanders daar zo vaak over?
And especially, why do the Dutch complain about it so often?
0:09Ja, dit is zo herkenbaar. In Nederland verandert het weer soms elk uur.
Yes, this is so relatable. In the Netherlands, the weather can change every hour.
0:14Je hebt zon, dan regen, dan weer wind. Alles achter elkaar. We zeggen vaak vier seizoenen op één dag, hè?
You have sun, then rain, then wind again. All in a row. We often say four seasons in a day, right?
0:21Precies.
Exactly. And complaining is almost a sport here. But it's also a kind of small talk, I think.
At the bus stop, you say: well, what rainy weather. And then you instantly connect with someone.
Yeah, it’s an icebreaker, so to speak. You don’t have to go deep, but you share something.
Someone says: phew, what wind, huh? And you say: yes, it’s really not normal today.
0:43Maar waarom klagen we dan zoveel? Nou, omdat het hier vaak gewoon grijs is.
But why do we complain so much? Well, because it’s often just gray here.
Not super hot, not super cold, but often just, meh, a bit boring.
You look out the window and think: well, clouds, again.
And that wind, you won't forget it. On your bike, you’re moving forward, but it feels like backward.
1:00Ik ben een keer bijna omgewaaid, echt waar. Nou ja, bijna, maar het voelde zo.
I almost got blown over once, no kidding. Well, almost, but it felt like it.
1:05Fietsen in de regen is ook top. Nou ja, niet echt. Je bril wordt nat, je sokken ook.
Biking in the rain is great too. Well, not really. Your glasses get wet, your socks too.
You get to work and you’re soaked, really soaked. Then you think: why me? Why now?
1:15Maar er is nog iets anders, denk ik. Wij vergelijken graag met andere landen.
But there's something else, I think. We like to compare with other countries.
We often romanticize the sun in Spain. Romanticizing is making it prettier in your head than it actually is.
And yes, it’s warm there, but then we complain it’s too hot again.
Yes, the grass is always greener at the neighbors, we say.
A friend of mine is from Iran. He sometimes laughs and says: you complain a lot, but life here is pretty good.
1:40En hij heeft ook wel een punt.
And he does have a point.
1:43We zijn al best zelfkritisch als land.
We’re already quite self-critical as a country.
Self-criticism means you like to see what could be better. That’s often good because you want to improve things.
But with the weather, well, you can’t fix that.
1:54Nee, regen uitzetten lukt niet, haha. Maar je kunt wel plannen.
No, turning off the rain doesn’t work, haha. But you can make plans.
1:58Ik kijk bijna altijd even op Buienradar of een andere weer-app.
I almost always check Buienradar or another weather app.
Then I know: okay, at three o'clock a shower is coming, so I’ll bike at half past two.
And a good jacket helps. Layers too, so t-shirt, sweater, jacket, then you can easily put them on and take them off.
A cheap umbrella often breaks in the wind, you probably know that.
My grandma once gave me a sturdy umbrella, but she said: don’t lend it out, otherwise it’ll never come back.
2:26Haha, zo Nederlands hè, zuinig maar slim. Cadeau met een regel erbij.
Haha, so Dutch, right? Thrifty but smart. A gift with a rule attached.
But honestly, that umbrella has lasted for years. That fits this country, being prepared for rain and wind.
The weather also affects your mood. In winter, it gets dark early and stays gray for a long time.
2:42Mensen worden soms een beetje somber. Een sombere bui, zeg maar. Dan ga je sneller mopperen.
People can get a bit gloomy sometimes. A gloomy shower, so to speak. Then you start to grumble more quickly.
2:47Wat mij helpt: ik maak het thuis gezellig. Kaarsjes aan, kop thee, dekentje.
What helps me: I make it cozy at home. Candles on, cup of tea, blanket.
Cozy is that warm, nice feeling with people or at home. Then I think: oh, let it rain.
We also have fun words for rain.
Drizzle is very light rain. A downpour is a short, heavy rain. And when it pours, it really rains hard.
3:21En we maken grapjes.
And we make jokes. Nice weather for the ducks, we say when it’s really wet. That’s a bit sarcastic, but still sweet.
3:29Je lacht en het moment voelt meteen lichter.
You laugh and the moment feels lighter right away.
I also lived in a tricky house for a while as a student.
I was a kind of ghost tenant. That’s someone who lives in a room but isn’t on the lease.
The house was cold and drafty, so I sometimes complained about the weather. But really, it was also the house.
Ouch yes, then you're inside with a coat on and the heating low. Because it’s expensive, you learn quickly.
4:05Truien over elkaar, dikke sokken en toch blijven lachen, hè?
Sweaters on top of each other, thick socks, and still laughing, right?
4:08Precies.
Exactly. And even then, I see the good things here.
Great bikes, trams that are usually on time, and warm soup at the supermarket.
The community is often friendly, even when it’s raining.
And the work-life balance is quite okay. You can still take a walk to work, even when it’s gray.
4:25Je denkt dan: frisse neus, klaar. En dat voelt eigenlijk heel goed.
Then you think: fresh air, done. And that actually feels really good.
I also love the coast in a storm. You go to the beach, your hair’s all over the place.
4:35Je voelt je zo levend. En daarna warme chocolademelk. Ja, dat is geluk.
You feel so alive. And then warm hot chocolate. Yes, that’s happiness.
4:40Goede planning helpt echt.
Good planning really helps. I often make two plans: an outdoor plan and an indoor plan.
If it's dry, I go cycling. If it’s raining, I go to the movies or visit a friend.
And how you talk matters too. If you say: yuck, what hot weather, you already feel hot.
But if you say: okay, it’s wet, but we’ll make the most of it, it feels lighter.
5:01Woorden hebben gewoon kracht.
Words really have power.
5:03Tegelijk.
At the same time. Complaining together can be nice too. You say: phew, what a day. And the other one says: yeah, I feel you.
And then you move on, a little complaining and then action.
5:13Mijn internationale vrienden lachen soms. Ze zeggen: jullie praten altijd over wolken, haha.
My international friends sometimes laugh. They say: you guys always talk about clouds, haha.
But when they cycle here in a force 6 wind, they get it right away. They really grip the handlebars with both hands.
Yes, and sometimes the rain comes almost horizontally because of the wind. Then you think: wow, how is that possible?
5:31Maar goed, we overleven het elke keer weer. Nederlanders zijn taai.
But hey, we survive it every time. The Dutch are tough.
5:35Kijk naar festivals hier. Regen?
Just look at festivals here. Rain? No problem. Poncho on, boots on, and we just dance in the mud.
5:42We maken er een feestje van. Klaar.
We turn it into a party. Done.
5:44Dus waarom klagen we?
So why do we complain? Because it feels safe. Everyone knows it and the weather is often a hassle.
It’s also a way to connect quickly. And sometimes it lifts your spirits.
5:55Maar we leven ermee.
But we live with it. We always find a way. And that’s what I love about the Netherlands.
6:00We maken van grijs toch iets gezelligs.
We make something cozy out of gray.
Just to sum up: good jacket, layers, check a weather app, make a plan B, and cozy up at home.
Try to look on the bright side and learn to laugh at the rain. Then it’s already half dry, I always say.
6:15En leer ook de woorden. Dat helpt bij Small Talk.
And also learn the words. It helps with Small Talk.
6:18Druilenweg, Miezer, Plensbui, Het Giet.
Drizzle, mist, downpour, it's pouring.
Then you can join the conversation at the register or at work.
6:25Dat voelt meteen meer Nederlands.
It instantly feels more Dutch.
6:28Zullen we afronden? Als je dit leuk vond, hé, geef dan even een like.
Shall we wrap up? If you liked this, hey, give it a like.
6:33En abonneer je op ons kanaal. Dan mis je niks. Dat helpt ons echt. Dank je wel.
And subscribe to our channel. That way you won’t miss anything. It really helps us. Thank you.
Yes, and tell us in the comments what you complain about regarding the weather and what helps you.
6:42Deel je tips. Daar hebben anderen ook wat aan.
Share your tips. Others can benefit from that too.
6:44Vergeet niet te liken en te abonneren. Dank je wel voor het luisteren.
Don’t forget to like and subscribe. Thank you for listening.
Until next time. And I wish you, well, a dry day.
6:53Of in ieder geval een goede jas. Doei, doei!
Or at least a good jacket. Bye, bye!
