Where to rent a bike in Germany, typical hourly/daily prices and deposits, what ID shops require, and practical city-cycling safety and route tips from Julia & Tim.
0:00Also, hallo zusammen. Schön, dass ihr wieder da seid.
So, hello everyone. Great to have you back.
Today we're talking about a super topic, bike rentals.
It’s perfect timing since the weather's getting nicer, right?
0:10Ja, total.
Yeah, totally. I saw the sun yesterday and thought,
0:14Mensch, ich will einfach mal wieder radeln.
Man, I just want to ride again.
And renting is just practical when you don't have your own bike
0:18oder wenn man in einer neuen Stadt ist.
or when you're in a new city.
Exactly, and renting is often cheaper than a car.
In many cities, biking is also faster, well, especially in traffic.
You can easily get from A to B and see more of the city.
0:32Sag mal, wo mietet man denn am besten?
So, where’s the best place to rent?
I often see little shops, but also stations on the street.
0:37Und manchmal gibt es Apps, also so eine Navi-App zeigt sogar, wo Fahrräder stehen.
And sometimes there are apps, like a navigation app that even shows where bikes are available.
0:41Hast du da Erfahrungen?
Do you have any experience with this?
0:42Ja, ein bisschen. Ich schaue immer zuerst nach Bewertungen,
Yeah, a little. I always check the reviews first,
0:45also nach Kommentaren von anderen Leuten.
like comments from other people.
0:48Ein Laden mit guten Sternen ist meistens okay.
A shop with good ratings is usually fine.
And I quickly ask at the counter about prices, if a lock is included,
0:55und wie ist die Rückgabe?
and what the return process is like.
0:56Stimmt. Das Schloss ist wichtig. Ein gutes Schloss spart echt Stress.
True. The lock is important. A good lock really saves you stress.
And I always ask about lights, both front and back.
1:04Ohne Licht ist man abends unsichtbar. Das ist gefährlich.
Without lights, you're invisible at night. That’s dangerous.
1:07Oh ja.
Oh yes. And honestly, I always take a quick test ride.
Two minutes around the block, just to see.
1:13Bremsen gut, Gangschaltung okay, Sattel nicht wackelig.
Brakes good, gears okay, saddle not wobbly.
1:17Gangschaltung heißt, du hast Gänge, damit du leichter oder schwerer treten kannst.
Gears mean you have different levels to make pedaling easier or harder.
1:21Ja, genau. Und die Sattelhöhe ist so wichtig.
Yeah, exactly. And the saddle height is really important.
I always say, set the saddle so your leg is almost straight
1:27wenn das Pedal unten ist. Dann tut das Knie nicht weh.
when the pedal is at the bottom. That way your knee won't hurt.
1:31Klingt simpel, hilft aber echt.
Sounds simple, but it really helps.
1:33Ich hab da eine kleine Geschichte aus Amsterdam.
I have a little story from Amsterdam.
1:36Ich hab mal dort ein Rad gemietet.
I once rented a bike there.
1:37Und ja, die Leute fahren schnell, sehr schnell.
And yeah, people ride fast, really fast.
You have to know the rules, stay in the bike lanes,
1:43Handzeichen geben und die Leute nicht blockieren.
signal with your hands, and not block people.
1:47Sonst gibt's böse Blicke.
Otherwise, you’ll get dirty looks.
1:48Haha, ja, ich hab auch gehört.
Haha, yeah, I’ve heard that too.
1:50In Amsterdam sind die Radwege heilig.
In Amsterdam, the bike lanes are sacred.
Tourists sometimes just walk right in, which is not good.
1:54Also, Leute, bleibt als Fußgänger auf dem Gehweg.
So, folks, stay on the sidewalk as pedestrians.
And when you’re biking, watch for tram tracks; they’re slippery.
2:00Guter Punkt. Und ich klingel früh genug, einfach freundlich.
Good point. And I ring my bell early enough, just to be friendly.
2:04So ein kurzes Kling-Kling sagt: Achtung, ich komme.
A quick ding-ding says: Watch out, I’m coming through.
2:07Und na ja, höflich bleiben hilft immer.
And well, staying polite always helps.
2:10Apropos Höflichkeit.
Speaking of politeness.
2:11Und die Preise, ja, die sind sehr verschieden.
And the prices, yeah, they really vary.
2:39In vielen europäischen Städten zahlst du so 10 bis 20 Euro pro Tag.
In many European cities, you pay about 10 to 20 euros per day.
2:44Für mehrere Tage gibt es oft Rabatt.
For multiple days, there's often a discount.
2:46Einfach freundlich fragen, das klappt oft.
Just asking nicely usually works.
2:49Ich hab auch von Leuten gelesen,
I've also read about people,
2:50die in Indien ein Rad gemietet haben.
who rented a bike in India.
2:52In Meghalaya, kennst du das?
In Meghalaya, do you know it?
They said it cost about 500 to 800 rupees a day.
2:58Und sie fühlten sich super frei,
And they felt super free,
3:00weil Busse nicht überall fahren.
because buses don't go everywhere.
3:01Oh, das klingt toll.
Oh, that sounds great.
Freedom, wind in your face, and you can just stop wherever you want.
3:06Aber ja, die Straßen sind manchmal hügelig, oder?
But yes, the roads can be hilly sometimes, right?
3:09Da hilft dann die Gangschaltung.
That's where the gears come in handy.
3:10Und vielleicht auch ein leichtes Rad.
And maybe a lightweight bike too.
3:12Und dann noch ein Tipp.
And here's another tip.
3:13Navi-App.
Navigation app.
3:15Ich nutze gerne eine App, die Radwege zeigt,
I like to use an app that shows bike paths,
3:17also nicht nur die schnellste Route für Autos.
not just the fastest route for cars.
3:20Da gibt es oft eine Option Fahrrad.
There’s often a bike option.
3:21Das spart Nerven, weil man ruhige Straßen nimmt.
It saves nerves, as you take quieter streets.
Yes, and download the map beforehand if you don’t have good reception.
3:28Offline-Karte heißt, es geht auch ohne Internet.
An offline map means you can go without internet.
That's great when you're in a new country.
And the battery lasts longer if the screen isn't always on.
3:36Guter Punkt.
Good point.
3:37Und wenn du unsicher im Verkehr bist,
And if you're unsure in traffic,
practice first on a quiet street or in a park.
Ride slowly, test the brakes, and practice hand signals.
3:47Handzeichen ist einfach der Arm nach links oder rechts,
Hand signals are simply your arm to the left or right,
3:49so wissen andere, wohin du willst.
so others know where you want to go.
3:51Viele haben auch Angst vor dem Runterschalten,
Many are also afraid of downshifting,
3:53also dem leichteren Gang.
meaning shifting to an easier gear.
I say, shift before the hill, not in the middle.
Take it easy, listen to the bike, and take your time.
4:00Es ist okay, langsam zu sein.
It's okay to be slow.
4:03Noch was zum Thema Transport.
One more thing about transport.
4:05Wenn du mit dem Zug fährst,
If you’re taking the train,
4:06check vorher, ob Fahrräder erlaubt sind.
check beforehand if bikes are allowed.
4:09Manche Züge haben nur wenig Platz für Räder.
Some trains have very little space for bikes.
4:11Ein Freund wollte mal spontan rein,
A friend once wanted to hop on spontaneously,
4:13aber kein Platz und zack, er musste warten.
but there was no space, and boom, he had to wait.
4:16Das war echt stressig.
That was really stressful.
4:17Oh ja, das kenn ich.
Oh yeah, I know that.
In some regional trains it’s fine, but not in all.
4:21Am besten online schauen oder beim Schalter fragen.
Best to check online or ask at the counter.
4:24Und manchmal braucht man ein extra Ticket fürs Rad.
And sometimes you need an extra ticket for the bike.
In Germany, it's often listed by the DB in the app.
4:30Und früh da sein hilft auch.
And being early helps too.
4:32Dann kann man in Ruhe einsteigen ohne Hektik.
Then you can board calmly without rush.
I like to park the bike near the door,
4:37aber nicht im Weg.
but not in the way.
4:38Sag mal, kennst du Swapfiets?
Hey, do you know Swapfiets?
It’s a subscription service, like a monthly contract for a bike with a blue tire.
4:44Die bringen dir das Rad.
They deliver the bike to you.
4:45Und wenn was kaputt ist, reparieren sie es.
And if anything's broken, they’ll fix it.
For people in the city, that’s often easier than renting daily.
4:50Ja, hab ich gesehen.
Yeah, I've seen it.
I find it practical if you're staying longer, like a month or more.
But for a weekend, a regular rental is better.
You only pay for the days you actually ride.
And whether it's a subscription or a rental, check the brakes.
5:06Ich drück beide Hebel einmal kräftig und schau, ob das Rad still steht.
I squeeze both levers hard once and see if the bike stays still.
If it squeaks or slips, I let the shop know right away.
5:13Besser vorher als später.
Better safe than sorry.
5:14Und das Licht.
And the lights.
5:16Ja, vor allem in der Dämmerung.
Yeah, especially at dusk.
Red in the back, white in the front, otherwise cars won’t see you.
5:22Ich nehm oft auch eine kleine Warnweste mit.
I often take a small reflective vest too.
5:25Sieht vielleicht doof aus, aber man wird gesehen.
It might look silly, but you get seen.
5:28Sicherheit geht vor.
Safety first.
I think a helmet is important too, even if not everyone wears one.
A helmet isn’t expensive, and it really helps in a crash.
5:36Manche Verleiher haben Helme zu mieten.
Some rental places have helmets for rent.
5:38Einfach fragen.
Just ask.
5:39Kostet oft nur wenig.
It often costs very little.
5:40Zum Schloss noch.
One more thing about locks.
5:41Ein Bügelschloss ist stark.
A U-lock is strong.
5:43Ein Kabelschloss eher schwach.
A cable lock is rather weak.
I put the bike in a fixed stand and lock the frame and front wheel.
Going into the shop without a lock is not a good idea.
5:53Das geht sonst schnell schief.
That can go wrong quickly.
Yeah, and make a note of where you park the bike.
5:57Ich mache manchmal ein Foto von der Ecke.
Sometimes I take a picture of the corner.
5:59Einfach zur Sicherheit.
Just for safety.
In an unfamiliar city, streets often look similar.
6:03Und dann sucht man sonst ewig.
And then you might search forever.
6:05Geldthema noch mal kurz.
One more thing about money.
Payment often works by card, but sometimes only in cash.
6:10Frag vorher, ob sie Wechselgeld haben.
Ask beforehand if they have change.
And if you give a deposit, keep the receipt safe.
6:15Ohne Quittung gibt es manchmal Diskussionen.
Without a receipt, there can be discussions sometimes.
And the opening hours, oh man, that’s easy to forget.
The shop might close at 6 PM, and you want to return at 7 PM.
6:25Frag einfach, ob eine spätere Rückgabe möglich ist.
Just ask if a later return is possible.
6:28Sonst zahlst du vielleicht eine extra Gebühr pro Stunde.
Otherwise, you might pay an extra fee per hour.
I’ve heard a nice story from Japan.
6:46Das liebe ich am Radfahren auch.
That’s what I love about cycling too.
6:59Es ist einfach nah am Leben.
It’s just close to life.
You can stop anywhere briefly, take a photo or grab an ice cream.
The city feels somehow smaller and nicer.
7:08Und für Einsteiger noch mal kurz.
And for beginners, just a quick recap.
7:10Fahr am Anfang nicht auf der Hauptstraße.
At first, don't ride on the main road.
Choose a quiet route, maybe by the river or through the park.
7:17Und schau über die Schulter, ohne zu wackeln.
And look over your shoulder without wobbling.
It's a bit tricky at first, but you'll manage.
If you have luggage, ask for a porter or a basket.
A backpack on your back is fine, but a basket is often more practical.
7:30Und spann die Riemen gut fest, damit nichts in die Speichen kommt.
And tighten the straps well so nothing gets caught in the spokes.
7:34Das ist sonst echt gefährlich.
Otherwise, it can be really dangerous.
7:37Nimm eine leichte Regenjacke.
Bring a light rain jacket.
And if the road is wet, brake earlier and more gently.
Tires slip faster and you should always ride at a right angle, not diagonally.
7:46Oh, und noch was Praktisches.
Oh, and one more practical tip.
7:49Frag nach einer kleinen Pumpe und einem Mini-Werkzeug.
Ask for a small pump and a mini-tool.
7:52Manche Verleiher geben das mit.
Some rental places provide those.
7:54Und vielleicht einen Ersatzschlauch, wenn du länger fährst.
And maybe a spare tube if you’re riding longer.
7:57Dann bist du nicht aufgeschmissen.
Then you won’t be stuck.
7:58Und wenn doch was passiert, ruf den Verleih an.
And if something does happen, call the rental shop.
The number is often on a sticker on the bike.
8:03Erklär kurz, was los ist und wo du bist.
Briefly explain what’s happening and where you are.
8:06Viele kommen sogar vorbei und helfen.
Many even come by to help.
8:08Versicherung ist auch ein Thema.
Insurance is also an important topic.
8:10Frag, ob es eine Diebstahlversicherung gibt.
Ask if there's theft insurance available.
Sometimes it costs a few extra euros, but it saves stress.
And read what to do if the bike gets stolen.
8:19Zum Schluss, mein Lieblingstipp: Hab einfach Spaß.
Finally, my favorite tip: Just have fun.
8:22Kleine Pausen machen, Wasser trinken und nicht hetzen.
Take short breaks, drink water, and don't rush.
Cycling is not just transportation; it’s also a feeling.
8:27So ein bisschen Freiheit für den Tag.
A bit of freedom for the day.
Oh yes, that was a lot, but hopefully helpful.
So, find a good rental shop, take a test ride, and stay safe.
8:38Dann wird es eine richtig schöne Tour.
Then it’ll be a really nice tour.
8:41Und erzählt uns gern von euren Erlebnissen.
And feel free to share your experiences with us.

And if you enjoyed this, just hit "Like" and subscribe to our channel.
8:52So verpasst ihr keine neuen Folgen.
That way you won’t miss any new episodes.
8:53Klingt gut, oder?
Sounds good, right?
8:54Klingt sehr gut.
Sounds really good.
8:55Danke fürs Zuhören.
Thanks for listening.
8:57Bleibt gesund und viel Spaß auf dem Rad.
Stay healthy and have fun on the bike.
8:59Wir hören uns beim nächsten Mal wieder.
We'll see you next time.
9:01Tschüss zusammen.
Bye everyone.
